What is The Blue Economy

The Blue Economy is a new growth model that shifts away from traditional price competition and focuses on value creation with available resources.

Instead of relying on cheap labour, environmental trade-offs, or tax exemptions, this model:
✔ Prioritises local economies by increasing purchasing power and accessibility to essential goods and services.
✔ Leverages nature’s abundance—particularly the oceans, which cover 71% of the Earth but contribute only 5% of GDP.
✔ Redefines business success by using a systems approach, identifying new opportunities, and implementing scalable solutions.

Since its adoption by the United Nations in 2010, the Blue Economy has inspired government initiatives, corporate transformations, and new industries worldwide.
Why energy and IT matter

Industry has always focused on core business. But success today means reacting to the real world — and that means seeing the bigger picture.

Energy isn’t a goal on its own. It powers cars, computers, water systems. The Blue Economy looks at how these connect. For example: combining renewable energy with water production creates new business models that seem unlikely — until they work. If the political framework allows, the risks are low and the benefits are big.

IT is no different.
Data processing depends on data transmission. With LiFi (internet through light), companies can shift from data mining to data farming. That means things like e-DNA and underwater 3D mapping — new ideas, new models, real impact.

Entrepreneur and innovator who created dozens of companies and set the stage for new industries like biodegradable detergents, stone paper, bioplastics, zero emissions shipping and data farming (vs data mining).

Strategic advisor to companies like IBM to design their “product to service strategy” in the 1980’s having given up all manufacturing; and, ACER accompanied the founder Stan Shih for several decades in his transformation as a group without headquarters, based on 30 publicly quoted enterprises that today have a combined value in excess of US$500 billion.

Author of 28 books including “THE BLUE ECONOMY” translated in nearly 60 languages. This Report to the Club of Rome led to the creation of 23 Ministries of The Blue Economy around the world. This has positioned Prof. Pauli as a key advisor to Governments around the world.

At present preparing an epochal book on “THE RIGHT TO BE SMART”, redefining education as we know it based on his 40 years as a pedagogue (and father of 6 children). Author of 365 fables bringer STEM and entrepreneurship to children distributed to all schools in China.

Owner of Porrima, the first ship that sailed around the world with renewable energies only (2010-2012) and first ship equipped with intelligent kite and hydrogen produced on board for unlimited sailing around the world (2017 onwards).
